Artist Statement
My dual interest in classicism and modernity stems from my education and upbringing, having studied classical art in Russia and contemporary art in America. I draw and paint portraits borrowing from both classical and more contemporary abstract, expressive styles. Specific historical movements in art have had a huge influence on me. I am interested in the Baroque era with regard to my work because I appreciate its drama and contrast, and the Post-Impressionist era for the marvelous expression of colors. Using the techniques from these eras, I combine concepts and aesthetics, that are old and turn them into something new. My combination of classical portraiture using elements of modern mass production, for example, speaks to this combination of old and new. This approach to making my art, helps me create works that are fresh while maintaining a sense of familiarity. Growing up, I would spend hours at The Pushking State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow looking at Discobolus, the classical Greek sculpture of a discus thrower. Education plays a big role in forming a person’s character and consequently the way they look at the world. Having studied the arts at universities across the globe, I have gained a multi-cultural perspective. My unique background has influenced my understanding of the art world and influenced my artistic style.
